Nigerian Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has called for the amendment of section 42 of the 1999 constitution to allow for allotment of special quota of political positions to women.
According to Ekweremadu, “by the provisions of Section 42 of the Constitution, you cannot discriminate against a particular community, ethnic group, place of origin, sex, religion, or political opinion by reason only that he is such a person. In order words, you cannot confer any special political advantage on women under the 1999 Constitution as amended”.
He said to have increase women participation the law must be altered-enforcing 35 percent affirmative action.
“the first step is to amend this Section to provide for an exception and also a special quota for women in line with the 35 per cent Affirmative Action,” he said.
